Iran says not to miss any opportunity to secure national interests, maintain regional peace via diplomacy

CAIRO, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Iran will not miss any opportunity to secure its national interests and maintain regional peace through diplomacy, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei wrote Thursday on the social media platform X, on the eve of the anticipated Iran-U.S. talks in Oman's capital, Muscat.

Noting that an Iranian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi has departed for Muscat for talks on Friday, Baghaei wrote that the discussions aim to reach "a fair, mutually agreeable and honorable understanding (between the two sides) on the nuclear issue."

Iran hopes that Washington "will also participate in this process with responsibility, realism and seriousness," he added.

The talks, with U.S. president's special envoy Steve Witkoff heading the U.S. delegation, are expected to take place as tensions remain high between Tehran and Washington.

Washington has recently signaled that military options remain possible should diplomatic efforts with Tehran fail, alongside reports of expanded U.S. naval deployments in the Middle East, while Iranian officials have warned that any U.S. strike could spark a broader regional conflict.
